Night Sky Quilt Top

I finished my Night Sky quilt top (pattern by Camille Roskelley) yesterday by 4pm... I was so anxious to finish it and take some pics when it started raining and it was so dark that I just did not wanna make any effort to take bad pictures. I was also hoping that with hubby at home today he could help me hanging the top but, it did not work well either (not your fault hubby, haha). I definetely need to get a different lens, mine is a 50mm that is awesome for portraits and details, but not for big objets.

After the excuses, here is my top!!! I have to say, I am very proud of this quilt!

As I told before I used most of the fat quarters that came in these bundles. When I started my top I only could say that I really like the colors and prints in each bundle, but I couldn't picture the whole quilt in those fabrics at all. After each block done I had a mix of feelings about how my top would turn out. I even got upset with some small blocks that I could barely see the stars because my wrong background choices.

When I was only eight blocks away to finish it I had to make it work with Kona Aqua. I LOVE this color. It just came on handy and I'm sure the aqua gave all the balance between the charcoal and grey. I tried the top on my daughter's twin size bed and it looks lovely... I definetly will share pics on her bed as soon as I get it quilted. BTW, any thoughts on how I should quilt it? (I've something in mind, but I'd Love to get some other opinions!!)

So, do you wanna keep sewing this pattern with me?! Oh, yes, I'm not done! I've another quilt in the row! I'm making it with Miss Kate by Bonnie & Camille. As I told in my previous post I've some awesome prizes (including Aurifil box threads by Camille Roskelley) and I'd love to give it away. I thought January 25th would be a good time for all of us to share our WIPs or completed quilts.
Please share what you've in mind!

Quilt Along update, more blocks and a winner!

I'm so happy to share that I'm almost done with my Night Sky Quilt  top verson 1! I need to make more two of those small blocks and sew the rows.

So, today I decided to show only this big block and the small one hoping that this Friday I'll share my completed quilt top. I just have to figure out how I'm gonna take good pics since it is raining and it seems it's not gonna stop until Saturday (love raining anyway ;-D).

Last week we had some Night Sky WIP linked up on this post. It's always fun to see fabric choices for this quilt pattern. We also had some awesome tips on how to make flying geese from Alyssa (Pile O'Fabric), Jane and Hildy

I was just thinking on extending our quilt along to January hoping that more of you will have enough time to join in and share your WIPs and finished quilts. I also have more prizes to giveaway from my sponsors and it's more exciting when we have a good number of participants linking up their projects.
BTW, the winner for the last week linking up projects is Sinta from Pink Pincushion

Night Sky QAL - hop and tips!

Today we're going to have a few more friends sharing their WIP. Last week I was amazed by the blocks and completed quilt tops from the blogger participants. The full list is bellow, please check out all the pics and more info about how they are making this quilt, their fabric choices, cutting and piecing process.

Today blog hop:

Melissa - Happy Quilting
Alyssa - Pile O'Fabric
Melanie - I Heart Stitching
Kim - Lily Patch Quilts

Last week we had:

Ruth - Ben's and Charly's Corner
Daniar Jolly Jabber (Fat Quarter Shop)
Sinta -  Pink Pincushion
Jane - Quilt Jane

These are some blocks I recently got finished. I'm now very used to the dark background, and I like it a lot, actually!

I also wanna share some wonderful tips that Hildy kindly sent me some weeks ago while she was cutting blocks for her Night Sky quilt also for a pillow she made using one of the big blocks from the pattern Night Sky by Camille Roskelley. If you're making this quilt you know we need to make flying geese for both small and big star blocks. I actually don't care much for the leftover (triangles) from the smaller units. But, for the big units the size of the triangles left is really something to consider.

So, back to Hildy. She explains exactely how you should cut your units for the bigger blocks so you'll have minimum waiste of fabric (in case you don't have plans for the leftovers like I have. I'm putting them in a ziplog bag and I'm gonna make another project I'll share in the future.).

Here's what she said:

"Hi Jana, as promised here is the picture of the first three small stars I've made but I'm almost finished with my big stars. While sewing the big stars I've discovered a method to save some  fabrics and have accurate flying geese units. For the big stars cut 4  x 4 1/2" x 8 1/2" and 4 x 5" x 5" (cut these 1x diagonal).

Draw two  45° lines from the opposite corners on the wrong side of the rectangle. Lay one triangle with the right side on the right side of  the rectangle and sew on the line. Press the triangle open and first trim the rectangle to the right size then the background under the trianle off.

The good thing is that you can use the leftover background triangles for the smaller stars. The even better thing is that I send you a picture that hopefully explain the whole thing better than I did above ;-) But perhaps you wanna share this trick if so feel free!Oh, and a made a pillow with the Night Sky block as birthday gift for a friend and she loves it! Hope you like it (btw I made her a pillow with the Adorn block from the Simple Retro quilt-along last year you  can she it, too)".

Hildy's pillow

I really hope you enjoy the tips! Thanks a lot Hildy! This post was linked to Freshly Pieced (Wip Wednesday)

To you all, HAPPY Thanksgiving!!!!

WIP - navy blocks for Night Sky quilt

Just a few pics of some navy blocks. I'm very excited about these blocks because the dark background. It's the first time I work with a dark solid background for my blocks (if I remember well...). I recently worked with a printed and dark fabric for one of the blocks  of my Night Sky quilt and I was pleased with the result. Hard to say it is the first time, but I always worked with novelties and cute prints for my bags so I've always kept the solid darks for lining  the bags. It's also funny how quilting give me so much freedom to work with different prints and colors.

This is a beautiful navy from Miss Kate collection by Bonnie&Camille.

Don't miss a blog hop this Friday (links will be here on my blog) to other participants blogs in the Night Sky Quilt Along. A link up party will also be opened so you can link up to your WIP. As I've said before it can be one or more blocks from your WIP Night Sky quilt. Don't miss out the chance to win some wonderful prizes!

Thank you so much for stopping by!

Night Sky Quilt Along - third week

Friday came like a bomb on our heads and that's it. Each end of the week I see how many things I couldn't get done. I've now two lists on my side just to remember me all things I need to pay, buy, choose, all the cleanings need to be done on my sofas and cover pillows, rugs (I do it all by myself) before Thankgsving. Sounds like a joke, doesn't it?!

So, as long as everyone is healthy let's celebrate that also let's celebrate the small finishes! Here more eight blocks what represents one more row for my Night Sky quilt. Wondering where is the other row for my version using three bundles?! I'm a little behind, but... just a little! Everything is cut and half sewn so I'm almost there with both versions! Yep, two quilts, remember?!

Thank you for all the comments on my earlier posts. I love you guys have a good sense of humor and can relate to my way (crazy way) to do things!

I didn't repeat a block yet! I feel like it is a game not repeating blocks, but it might happen since I've more four rows to go!

So, thank you for being with me in this quilt along. Just wanna let you all know, the giveaways are coming! I might announce the first one next week! You only need to have your WIP! So, if you've at least one block done, that's it!

Always visit my lovely sponsors if you still need to get Night Sky pattern by Camille Roskelley. There a lot of sales going on, so antecipate and get your backings or even bundles to make this quilt at excelent prices!

Christmas fun along!

I'm stopping by today to share with you some blocks I finished for Lori Holt #haveyourselfaquiltylittlechristmas along at Instagram! Insane I know, mainly because I have also to finish my blocks for the Night Sky quilt along I'm hosting. Ok, I've till Friday!

I'm not sure how much time I'll have to sew close and after Thanksgving, between my daughter's birthday and Christmas, trips, New Year... that's why I'couldn't pass this! (crazy quilters always have an good excuse! hehe)

I finally found a good reason to use some fabrics from Bake Sale, a fabric collection  from Lori that I bought with a Kit for a class I took with her last year. Other fabrics are also from Riley Blake Designs.

The blocks are from Quilty Fun first Lori Holt's book. But, she is also making new blocks and sharing the tutorials on IG! Let's have a Quilty Christmas!

Miss Kate Pincushion and Night Sky blocks

Today I've quite a few pics to share so I'll let them speak for themselves. I'm very happy with my work so far. Some days I sew more than others (like today I didn't sew at all) so I've managed to keep my goal that's having at least one row for my Night Sky quilt done per week. As I'm making two versions (cra-zy!) I need to have two rows each week for seven weeks until I finish the tops!

Learn more about Night Sky quilt along here and let's sew!

I loved what Jackie said in one of her comments that's "fun to be busy"! I agree! I sew much more when I commit to than when I just let things go. That's why I LOVE quilting along.

After some cutting I got tiny rectangles from some fabrics of Miss Kate collection (I had a layer cake and had to buy some fat quarters). I quickly made this pincushion. I happened to like this pic a lot too...

Eight blocks done, one completed row for my Night Sky quilt with Miss Kate!

Bellow, more two blocks for the second row of my second quilt (I need to name this quilt, haha). The other two blocks for this row you can check clicking in here. I'm making this quilt mixing up three different fat quarter bundles!

I hope you're having some progress as well! Please share pics even if you don't have a blog. You can send the pics to my email. I got some pics from Hildy that I'm gonna share next week! There are some popping on Instagram too. Look for #nightskyqal

Have a very nice weekend!

Blocks with Miss Kate - Night Sky QAL

It's really amazing how my blocks are just popping very quickly! As you may know I've a little spare time to sew so I'm squeezing to make these blocks every little time I can. And I'm having fun! Because if I' wasn't having any fun I wouldn't sacrifice a sink full of dishes or rooms sprinkled with toys everywhere screaming to be put away! haha
That's all about sewing with little ones around, right?! ;-D

Miss Kate is definitely a happy collection. I smile every time I have a new block done. The prints just blends so well. This quilt will turn out amazing, I know! Oh, I forgot to say, these blocks are for my Night Sky quilt and I'm making two quilts as I've told before. Join me in this quilt along that just started a few days ago. Really, you've no idea how quick you can make these blocks. After making a few you just can't stop, it's all about choosing fabrics for each one. All different, never the same block, very exciting! More info about the QUILT ALONG, here.

I hope you enjoy my weekly selections. Also leave comments and point out which new upcoming or just released fabric collections are taking your sleep away!

Night Sky QAL - winner and first row finished!

Today I'm gonna share the first eight blocks for my Night Sky quilt. If you wanna know more about the Quilt Along that is just starting this week please read this post. The goal is to finish one row per week during seven weeks then we'll have our completed top early in December. I'm making this more random version using three bundles plus some other scraps. My second version (wait to see some blocks next week) will be made with Miss Kate fabric collection. It's really crazy but, I couldn't resist making two versions with this pattern :-)

This is the first time I'm using some dark colors in a quilt. I was for years always very comfortable using black and darks on my bags. I think it's really working in this quilt so far. I plan to use more aqua in future blocks to get more balance. I also think that I'm gonna avoid more of this yellowish green. It works for inside the blocks but not really well as a background for the stars. I do appreciate your opinions too!

Don't forget, on Instagram use #nightskyqal Also share your pics on Flickr group.

Next week I'm gonna share our prizes for the Quilt Along! Our sponsors have really good stuff to giveaway. All you need to do is enter your WIP! It doesn't matter if it's just a block or more, I do count on you!! Entries will be open in a couple of weeks.

Now, I've a winner for the Night Sky pattern that will be send by Fat Quarter Shop!!!

Jackie Thompson who said (about how she chooses fabrics for her quilts): "I like to use fabrics coordinated by a more masterful eye, but I am comfortable straying from the placement and exact color scheme of the pattern".

Please Jackie, contact me as soon as you can! You're a not reply comment blogger and didn't leave your email either. I do appreciate your participation and I'm hoping you get back to me! I only could sent to you a message on Google plus.

WIP - Night Sky Quilt Along - blocks

I'm so glad the blocks for my Night Sky quilt are going so fast! I don't like to cut all pieces for the whole quilt at once. Cutting everything just seems to take a big part of the fun away, so I'd rather cut enough for one or two blocks them I go and sew them (update: never mind! Now I'm like a mad woman cutting as much as I can and sewing. I was putting too much thought and taking a lot of time deciding which print for each block, but not anymore). Oh well, I know each one have its own way to quilt and sew ;-)

I've mixed two collections to make this quilt (read more in my earlier post). I think the fabrics are working very well together. The bundle with more charcoal prints did scare me a bit. I love the whole bundle, but I wasn't sure when I'd make something with the dark prints. So far, I like the romantic and dramatic feel the prints from Sunshine Rose  and Au Revoir Cherie bring to the blocks.

If you're just reading this post, please learn more about the Night Sky quilt along that just started this week. Every week I'm gonna share my progress on making this quilt. Today I've just a sneak peek, but this Friday I'll be sharing all of my blocks for the first row of this quilt. One row per week! There is also a giveaway running right now, don't miss the chance to win one copy of the Night Sky pattern!

I also wanna suggest the bundle that Alyssa owner of Pile O'Fabric has put together to make Night Sky quilt. It's a very pretty bundle you just need to check it out! I personally told her I'd rather make this quilt with her KIT, but at the time I got to know I had already made my choices and ordered my fabrics.

All of my sponsors are packed with inexhaustible fabric collections to make this quilt. Browse their websites:
Fat Quarter Shop

or as I always say, just go to your stash!

Night Sky quilt along- 1st Giveaway! and finished blocks

Giveaway on this post, open to all readers! Scroll down!
Here they are, my very first blocks for my Night Sky quilt. If you're just landing in here, learn more about Night Sky Quilt Along that we're going to officially start next Friday, October 30th.

I initially planned to make two versions of this quilt, one very scrappy (and I mean very randomly process, pulling scraps out from the scrap bin without thinking too much) and another version with a fat quarter bundle. For the blocks I'm showing today, I couldn't help myself and I mixed up two fat quarter bundles, but the green fabric was added from the scraps (check this post and see closer pics and details about these collections)!

For the second version I'm gonna use only one bundle, and that'll be... Miss Kate by Bonnie&Camille! If you agree with me, this quilt will look very scrappy with any choices of fabric. Now I know for sure why I couldn't resist this pattern :-)
Well, I'm so glad I finished these blocks today! I was very anxious to find if my choices would be good to my eyes... and they are.

To warm things up, let's have our first quilt along Giveaway! Today Fat Quarter Shop is giving one copy of the Night Sky pattern!

To participate just answer: Are you always comfortable making a quilt by choosing fabrics on your own or you prefer to make it with the same fabric selection as shown on the pattern?

Get one more entry (optional) promote it in any other social media. Leave an extra comment in this post and  the link. (on Instagram use #nightskyqal)

Important: This giveaway is OPEN to all readers, no exception. Yay!!! Winner will be randomly chosen next Wednesday, October 29th.

Remember, you still have time to buy your pattern and to choose your fabrics. But, get ready and let's have some fun on the way! Check these shops and get your pattern. Also go to Pile O'Fabric and check the complete KIT to make this quilt that Alyssa, Pile O'Fabric owner has especially prepared for this quilt along!
